چکیده

A systems engineering methodology for analyzing a system of systems (SoS) elucidated in this paper involves the use of process modeling, modeling of the SoS with the systems modeling language (SysML), and subsequent conversion of the resulting SysML model into an end-to-end system of systems executable object-oriented simulation model. A process is a series of actions undertaken by a system or a system of systems to produce one or more end results, typically products and services. The SysML extends and customizes UML 2 to support systems engineering activities in engineering of complex systems. The methodology represents part of our on-going research at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in establishing an integrated methodology for SoS architecting and engineering to be used in industry. In this paper we will explain the methodology and emphasize the correspondence between the SysML representation of a conceptual SoS and its executable model (via ExtendTM); we will also illustrate the methodology with an exploratory application to analysis of a coalition U.S.Singapore SoS architecture employed to counter terrorism emanating from the maritime domain. Our future work is aimed at extending the methodology and improving its rigor and tying it to ontological engineering.

An Integrated Systems Engineering Methodology for Analyzing Systems of Systems Architectures

In this exploratory work, an integrated systems engineering methodology for analyzing architectures of systems of systems (SoS) involves linking an SoS architecture development process to the DoDAF products, using the systems modeling language (SySML 1.0) to represent DoDAF products, and hence to model the SoS architecture, and linking the SysML diagrams with the SoS architecture development pr...

Generating SysML views from an OPM model: Design and evaluation

Conceptual modeling is key to Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) approaches. OPM (Object-Process Methodology) and SysML (OMG Systems Modeling Language) are two state-of-the-art conceptual modeling languages. While both languages aim at the same purpose of providing a means for general-purpose systems engineering, these languages take different approaches in realizing this goal. As each of t...

Using SysML modeling to understand and evolve systems of systems

The recent Department of Defense (DoD) guidebook, Systems Engineering Guide for Systems of Systems, describes how traditional systems engineering activities have evolved to support systems engineering at the system of systems (SoS) level. Part of the research for this guidebook probed the application of modeling and simulation to support SoS systems engineering. The findings indicated that limi...

A Formal Universal Systems Semantics for SysML

OMG SysML1 is a general purpose systems modeling language adopted by OMG in May, 2006. Used for specifying, analyzing, designing, and verifying complex systems; it provides graphical representations with a semantic foundation for modeling system requirements, behavior, structure, and integration with a broad range of engineering analysis. SysML represents a subset of UML2 with extensions needed...

developerWorks : Rational: Rational Edge ezine

The Systems Modeling Language (SysML) is a general-purpose, graphical modeling language for product and systems development. The new standard gives systems engineers and architects a much-needed way to collaborate using a common language specifically designed for systems engineering. This month, we introduce SysML by presenting a real-life example of a product with multiple sub-systems, all of ...
